When an object’s center of mass is above the base of support, the object will balance, even if momentarily. If the base of support is flat, the object will balance stably. This kit shows this principle in dramatic fashion by balancing a full two liter bottle cantilevered at an angle with only indirect support. This simple experiment allows students to explore the key concepts of balance, center of mass, and stability. This guide is provides ideas for age appropriate discussion and interaction between educator and student. A 2 liter bottle, either full or empty, is required to explore the concepts in full. A small scale and a of couple rulers are necessary for older students to be able to calculate the center of mass in the balancing direction.
