EISCO Magnetite Specimen (Mineral), Approx. 1" (3cm) - Pack of 12
Brand: EISCO
Magnetite forms as an accessory mineral from an igneous melt. As magnetite cools, the iron in its atomic structure becomes magnetized. When forming igneous rocks, grains of magnetite align themselves with the earth's magnetic field, preserving a record of the field's direction. This has been useful in determining how often the magnetic field has switched directions over the course of Earth's history.
Details
- Twelve magnetite samples approximately 1" (3cm) in size
- Great for use in mineral identification exercises - magnetite's attraction to magnets and distinctive black streak make it simple to identify
- Perfect size for use in classroom identification labs and exercises, correlates well to Next Generation Science Standards Evidence Statements
- Strongly magnetic (will be attracted to magnets, but cannot be used to attract other metallic objects)
- Specimen comes in clear labeled and barcoded bag for ideal storage
